How Thoughts Lead to Behaviors

One of the most frequent questions my clients ask me is “What is anxiety and how can I be free of it?” 

They’ve struggled with anxiety most of their lives.

They were told to “cope” with it by other professionals.

They were told it would never ever go away, “you just have to deal with it”.

We all experience moments of anxiety over our lifetime. That’s normal because it’s a function of how our thoughts create our feelings.

This is not a problem at all.

But it becomes a problem because so many of us actaully misunderstand where anxiety comes from.
Most of us believe that anxiety comes from “outside” of us, that it is “beyond our control”.

Most people believe their anxiety comes from:

  • Their Past
  • Money Problems
  • Work Relationships
  • Personal Relationships
  • Phobias
  • The Pandemic
  • Wearing a Mask

We believe that cause of our anxiety comes from an event or other person outside of us. Outside of our control.  And it is THIS basic misunderstanding about anxiety that creates uneccessary suffering for millions of people.

I remember many years ago, I would have panic attacks just thinking about my upcoming flight back home from Chicago. My flight was weeks away and I’d be home thinking about it. I would break out in a sweat, my heart would beat so fast I thought I was having a heart attack. Back then, I had no idea where my anxiety and panic attacks were coming from. I simply believed the reason was BECAUSE I had a fear of flying. I’m happy to report, I no longer have anxiety when thinking about flying or while I’m in the air.

It’s simply a misunderstanding of why we feel anxiety. We don’t realize that the antidote to our anxiety lies within us. Our innate mental health is there for all of us to take advantage of. But we aren’t given this knowledge. And it is the BEST kept secret that will actually free you from anxiety.

We live in a world thinking that stress, anxiety, fear or any other feeling is coming at us from something or someone else.

Have you been at work at the lunch table having a fun conversation with a co-worker? And sddenly, that “difficult person” appears in the cafe and it looks like she is coming over to your table? How many of you have felt the sudden anxiety that bubbles up inside?

ere lies the illusion:

You have associated those feelings of anxiety with that “difficult person”.  So in your mind, your sudden anxious feeling is “created” by the difficult person.

But when we learn to see how our emotional response of “anxiety” is actually a response to the THOUGHT of “Uh oh. That difficult person is coming my way”, we canreally begin to reframe our entire experience. We can take a deep breath and let go of our misunderstanding about what is causing our “anxious response” to the approach of a difficult person.

Anxiety is ONLY created by your thoughts. When you are not thinking an anxious thought, you are not feeling anxious.

I’m here to tell you that anyone can learn how to become attuned to the nature of thought itself. 

The more we try to control, manage, change, stop or reframe thought, the more attention we give to it and the worse we feel. Trying to control or manage thought always keeps it front and center in our minds. It makes us constantly feel like we have to “do something” about our thoughts in order to feel better. 

When you learn how to experience the true nature of thought and understand your inner capacity for good mental health without the struggle to “control” or “regulate” yourself, it will feel like freedom!
